Remembering our ANZACS on the 95TH Anniversary of Gallipoli

21st April 2010

Member for Eden-Monaro, Mike Kelly, today encouraged people in Eden-Monaro to take part in local Anzac Day commemorations to remember the service and sacrifice of Australia's servicemen and women.

Dr Kelly said services would be held across Eden-Monaro this Sunday Dawn Services and Marches in the major centres

Dr Kelly said: "This year marks 95 years since the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps - the Anzacs - landed at Gallipoli."

"On Anzac Day Australians gather in almost every town and city across the country to mark this important day."

"As a nation we honour those who have served, and continue to serve our country and we especially remember the more than 102,000 who gave their lives serving our country.

"They endured a bloody campaign lasting eight months and costing the lives of more than 8700 Australians.

"Even though it has been 95 years since the Anzacs landed at Gallipoli, the Anzac ideals of courage, determination and mateship have carried through to today's Australian Defence Force."

"I would ask everyone to also spare a thought for the men and women of the ADF currently serving on operations around the world."

Anzac Day is an important time for young Australians to learn about the significance of the day and its defining role in our wartime history.

Dr Kelly said: "Taking part in local commemorations is an important way to honour the men and women who have put their lives on the line to protect our country,"
