Seatbelts for Kids Scheme - Round Seven Open
22 November 2010
Member for Eden-Monaro, Dr Mike Kelly, has encouraged regional and rural school bus operators to apply for funding to install seatbelts on their buses under round seven of the Seatbelts for Kids scheme.
Bus operators can apply for funding of up to $25,000 under the scheme and Mike Kelly urged local schools, parents and community groups to support their applications.
Mike Kelly said: “Bus operators and the communities they serve should take every opportunity to improve the safety of children.
“Buses on our country roads face both long distances and fast speeds and it is important to ensure our local kids are protected as much as possible in the case a crash could occur.”
The Seatbelts for Kids scheme aims to increase the number of school buses equipped with seatbelts for students in rural and regional areas.
Bus operators who have an existing contract with a state or territory government to provide school bus services on a recognised rural and regional school bus route can apply for funding to fit seatbelts to new buses or retrofit existing buses, including associated engineering work.
“I strongly urge regional and rural school bus operators to get their applications in for funding of up to $25,000 per bus, and communities, schools and parents to support their applications,” Mike Kelly concluded.
Applications for Seatbelts for Kids Round 7 close on 17 December 2010.
